Taylor,
I see you're getting some good response on both sites. Couple of additional words.
Priming is very important. At Orange Empire years ago some overlapping test patches were done on the side of a 1910 Santa Fe box car. Primer only/printer and color coat/color only. Later the entire car got a single color coat of paint applied to it. The person doing the work did not believe in preparation and primer -- he didn't think the railroads did it so why should he! Well, the car has been outside for years and the single color coat is flaking off. But, where the primer patch was applied the color has not done any flaking.
You mentioned that you had a sample piece of wood. You and the Sumter Valley should label it and store it away after you done with it. That way someone in future can look at an original piece of the car and make the right decision when repainting the car. You and your followers should not have to rely on faded paint or faded memories as to the paint color.
