Now that is bizarre.

FWIW, I've managed to enable the disable e-mail notification function in the e-mail group so you can now turn it on and off at will. Also since every post has the same subject, it's easy to set up an e-mail filter to direct every new post to a unique folder. That way you may be bombed by every post, but you won't really notice it - unless you look in that folder.

Probably, maybe not recommended for dial up type of connections tho.....
