Hi John,
First, we’ve been provided 1965 and 1970 shots that show the the previous paint scheme of the speeder shed’s “danger” sign definitely had a red background and white lettering. IIRC the 1970 shot is posted on this thread. We got the other backdoor.
The paint scheme oil loading facility’s “danger” signs frankly was harder to nail down because we couldn't find many color photos with closeup views of the signs, but we believe that the blueish appearance on some of the few color shots we’ve seen of those signs was an undercoat visible due to wear and fading on a red topcoat that was the sign's background. The years of photos of the north-end sign (which we believe was relocated to the south end before being recently removed for examination and safekeeping) that showed or pointed toward red backgrounds are 1978 and 1990; folks posted those photos on this thread. We also examined the signs' dark background in some b-and-w photos to see if it fit with a red coloring and it did.
Finally, we took note that these were safety signs and that red is a traditional color for fire-related safety signs.
