Man, how time flies!**
Twenty years ago today, ex-S.P. #2472 headed south from San José, CA to Los Angeles on
her longest journey to date following her restoration and the Resurrection Day double-header
with #4449 on 05/17/91. (See [
ngdiscussion.net] and [
ngdiscussion.net].)
Between Gilroy and Salinas, the S.P. mainline runs through the wildlife refuge at Elkhorn Slough for a couple of miles
:
A few miles south of King City the railroad climbs along a cliff, and later rolls through some of the richest farmland anywhere
:
Steinbeck Country - or its fringes, anyway - typical California the Golden rolling hills and oak trees. Here's the train entering Bradly, about fifty miles north of San Luis Obispo and twenty miles east of Jolon
:
... And Steinheimer Country. Late in the afternoon, #2472 and her train descended Santa Margarita Pass, rounded Horseshoe Curve (in the far background, below - too far away to tell if a horse whinnied
... ), and crossed the big trestle at Stenner Creek, just north of San Luis Obispo
:
#2472, her crew and her passengers spent the night in SLO, and completed the run south to L.A. the following day.

* #2472's southbound journey in mid-September 1992 was named 'The
Pacific
Shore
Limited' in remembrance of one of S.P.'s premier trains in the pre-
Daylight era. A week later she returned north pulling 'The Earth Train'.
** It has been noted elsewhere that it's hard to time flies - them little buggers move fast, and change direction quicker than most peoples' eyes can follow
