IIRC, steam helpers with diseasel road engines were pretty common north out of Dunsmuir
up to at least Mount Shasta and often to the summit at Grass Lake on the Shasta Division
(and probably east out of Bakersfield up to Tehachepi on the San Joaquin line) in the early
fifties, but these were black widow cab units, not ultra-uguly SD-9's ...
