Hi Andrew et al -
On May 17, 1991, #2472 was on the point of a revenue passenger train for the first time
in nearly 35 years! She double-headed with #4449 on a mostly-Daylight run to Oakland;
#2472 then continued on to San Francisco and her home at Hunter's Point, while #4449
pulled the passenger train back to Sacramento.
Final preparations were being made on the 17th before the sun was up. Here's Doug Debs behind the pilot beam, fireman John Teshara checking the valve gear, Severn Edmonds
* working on the feedwater pump and engineer Neal Vodden consulting with hostler Ron Sloan while Bill Stetler looks on -
Per Doug, whom I called this morning on the twentieth anniversary of the taking of these photos, the feedwater pump needed some last-minute attention. The first photo below shows Doug kneeling on the right, Severn on the ladder, and Neal at the right; in the second photo worry-wart Doug, in the foreground, is probably muttering,
"Well, Mangini - here's another fine kettle of fish you've gotten us into." That's Bill standing near the air pump and Severn still on the ladder, with Neal, John and Ron conversing near the cab
:
The sun came up just in time to illuminate the first turn of the wheels as the train backed out of the museum to the passenger terminal -
RESURRECTION! #2472 Returns to Revenue Service. (This is a re-scan and re-edit of the photo posted last week on the 'Steinheimer' thread) -
This one has been posted before, but the scan was from an old print. Here's a new version of 'Clear Stack Rides Again', showing how John Teshara earned his nickname. #2472 is doing most of the work, yet the exhaust is so clear you could read a newspaper through it -
Th' ... Th' ... That's All, Folks!!

* Edited 05/19 - As promised, Doug checked these photos and helped me fill in the missing names.
