I remember seeing the first post of this shot, and of course I recognized where it was taken (the first time I recall this particular curve was from a dutch door on train 101 back in 1966... just after my first ever exposure to the locomotive shops at Roseville).
Ever since I saw your "clear stack" shot, I wanted to share my example... and lo and behold the opportunity came.
I got a lot of shots during that particular run back to the GGRM home of the 2472, including some great shots at Oakland's 17th Street facility at night. Another better shot of the train crossing the bridge was submitted to TRAINS magazine (where it languishes to this day, along with probably my best image ever from the C%TS (taken the same time as the photo that serves as my avitar).
My only regret was as the train left the the Oakland station, Mike Manginni asked me to come aboard and ride to the City. And, in typical fashion I passed... thinking I would miss a lot of shots of the trip.
Yeah... and I'm going to win the Mega Millions tomorrow.
Oh, well, there's always a steam-up in Niles Canyon...
