Hi, All -
Scanning, editing and posting these photos brought back a LOT of good memories of Great people
and Great times, and prompted me to dig out an old VHS - "RUNNING STEAM LOCOMOTIVES
SUPPLEMENT" - featuring hostler Ron Sloan, fireman John Teshara and engineer Neal Vodden.
Beginning with checking the engine upon their arrival, Ron and John take us step-by-step through the process of lighting off an oil-burning locomotive (#2472), while explaining the function of each of the myriad controls on the fireman's side of the engine. John and Neal then describe in detail the operation of the engine in daily commuter service on the S.P., and the many subtleties that made for a safe and smooth run.
IIRC a DVD version of this video was available from the Golden Gate Railroad Museum for a time. I strongly recommend that anyone with a serious interest in firing or running a steam locomotive track down and buy a copy!!

I'll be watching the second half of this video while eating dinner later this evening, so John Cole better not call until tomorrow!! ... (Just kidding.)
