Sunol, CA. March 27, 2010. The Alameda County sheriffs department responded to a call from the Niles Canyon Railroad that a scruffy looking character was lurking around their railroad yard with a can of green paint. Volunteers of the Golden Gate Railroad Museum were steaming up their big black ex- Southern Pacific locomotive for a trip the following morning when they noticed the uninvited intruder. On several occasions the intruder darted out of the shadows with a paint brush loaded with green paint shouting “paint it green, paint it green”. Volunteers stopped him and escorted him off the property twice, but after his third attempt in the early morning hours they called the sheriffs office. The suspect, whose identity could not be confirmed, said in broken German that his name was “Curmudgeon of the South” and said he was doing God’s work. He was taken to the Alameda County jail and released. The Alameda District Attorney’s office said no charges would be pressed since they could not find a law against green paint.
The big black steam engine escaped unscathed and steamed mightily the following morning.
