Lon, I have wondered about some of the things you have brought up. I've kinda liked the idea of the multiple volume sort of thing, in which the author has to be very careful in the first volume to hook the reader on the subject so they will want volume 2 when it comes out and so on. Maybe vol. 1 should be more along the lines of overview and pictorial, with the next volume and subsequent ones. centering on specific areas with lots of maps, roster and data.
