I made the trip up the west side during July of last year. There was still a little snow around, but the road was clear and dry (although quite rough). If anybody's interested in more photos of the line (about 56 total), they're posted on my website:

West Side of the Alpine Tunnel - 2006

One of these days I'll get up the road/trail on the east side of the hill. Was on my list for this year, but haven't gotten to it yet.
