There's a certain amount of that, too. Consensus probably liked three feet because it is 36 inches or 1 yard. It's connection to a yard was probably the biggest thing.

We have a number system based on 10 because we have ten fingers. I think our numbers would look quit different if, say, we had three fingers on one hand and four on the other.
