There are also oddly enough hundreds of baretable/piggyback/TTX cars stored on the line between Monte Vista and South Fork, someone said it was 37 miles of stored cars......
The stored cars make money for the railroad; so much per day per car. Multiply number of cars per mile times 37 miles, and that's a goodly amount of "free" money. Same thing down here in Hobbs, where the Texas-New Mexico Railroad is part of the same organization (Permian Basin Railways) as the the San Luis and Rio Grande (SLRG). In addition to TNMR and SLRG, PBR owns the Arizona Eastern Railway (AZER) and the West Texas & Lubbock Railway (WTLC).
