I have the same question; we just returned from vacationing in South Fork, CO and spent several days alongside this route from South Fork up to Creede. The track is still there of course but there's no signs of any activity that I could see. Sad to say that the folks in that area are fighting the group that is trying to restore a tourist operation on that line, it is a very, very scenic route and would be a wonderful line to ride on. The Wagon Wheel Gap Depot appears to be privately owned and in use as a residence and is in great condition. The Creede Depot also looks to be in good repair but the rails to it apparently are severed. There's a little GE 44 tonner switcher, an ATSF business car, and an observation car (FEC or Seaboard?) sitting on a siding in South Fork too. Most of the equipment destined for this operation is stored farther east up the line (about 40 miles east) in Monte Vista, CO. Not narrow guage, but the track is intact from Creede all the way to Walsenburg, CO so one could conceivably travel the whole line. There are also oddly enough hundreds of baretable/piggyback/TTX cars stored on the line between Monte Vista and South Fork, someone said it was 37 miles of stored cars......
Would love to hear if the Wagon Wheel Gap Route was safe and progressing!
PS - did ride the 1744 out of Alamosa, had a great time with Earl, Dennis, and the "Commander"....
