The cost to rebuild S-Wye will be in the six figure range. The largest cost will be the bridge across the Powder R. It will be in the $700 range. The wye leg approaches are the original ROW and are flat, requiring minimal work. The legs converge at or on the bridge. Volunteers will probably do the track laying in this area. The tail ROW is overgrown with Ponderosa Pine and eroded, and this will require considerable grading and repair. Plus the plan is to acquire and install all spring switches to minimize stops for switching.
We hope to hear soon on a grant application to begin work on the S-Wye project. S-Wye will of course be less expensive than the Sumpter loop, and be about as exciting as the loop, perhaps even more. The loop will likely continue to be persued, but with the cost rising continually, it may be a long time before completion.
