Well here is what I recall and the photos seem to match this:
473 was on 461-2 and 478 was on 463-4. I notice 473 is coming in on the track closest to the depot in the shot I have posted. It would seem unlikely 464 would come in on the next track over and make the passengers walk around the train. The pic of the 478 shows the brakeman lining him out of the #1 track at the south end of the depot yard. Maybe they pulled the train in on the main and backed it into the other track? I don't remember that. I do recall #50 switching the consists around the next morning.
I don't think Payne had a regular job running back in '67. I recall a real old guy in 473 (train 461) and a not-so-real-old guy on 478 (perhaps Don Gibbs). Another old guy (probably Steve Connor) was on the 50 in the morning. I think Payne was 4th out on the engineer board then. Which would have put him on the right hand seat whenever an extra went east or to FArmington or someone laid off. I think I have a pic of 473's engineer that afternoon. I'll see if I can post it. It might have been Payne. The guy had a striped Lee cap and brown shirt.
