I was thumbing through an old family picture album and found some pics my dad took on our first visit to Durango in 1967. My then-9 year old scrawl say they were taken on August 2-3, 1967 - 40 years ago this week:
Yours truly at age 8 on the platform of 0540...
473 drifts into town with train 462. Note the private car track on the left. The track going off to the left of the PV track is the original loop track.
Over in the roundhouse, 476 was dead with some of its superheater units removed - getting them out through the little front door must have been interesting!. Next stall over was 487, under steam and hooked up to the house boiler through a hose draped across the plow.
Outside was 498, also under steam. 487 and 498 had recently come in from Chama with a freight and 498 had gone to Farmington and back a day or so before we got there. Retired 464 casts a long shadow in 498's direction. In the distance 473 is tied up by the sandhouse.
Another shot of 473, with the coal tipple in the back ground. They kept the Silverton engines here overnight and did the servicing here.
I included this pic only because is shows MW02 on the roundhouse lead in the background...
478 with a new coat of aluminum paint on the smokebox arrives with train 464. That's brakeman John Nolan lining him out the end of the depot yard. I assure you the nice framing by the tree is totally by accident.
The next morning, 473 takes a ride on the table while yours truly supervises..
498 comes out of her track onto the table and get moved to the outbound track. She sat there for a few days before heading east with 487 to Chama.
