Re: Wreck of 483 as downhill helper

July 25, 2007 03:55PM
The 483 was the lead engine of a doubleheader when it turned over, killing fireman Paul Mayer, brother of long-time railroader Jim Mayer. The engineer was Bill Holt. Bob Shock and Jack Waterman on the road engine 495 escaped serious injury.
Andy Payne said the officials were looking at taking Holt to task for speeding but then decided it was because of the track beiung made unsteady by rains.
Also here is a challenge. Find a report on this wreck. It is not in special collections on the DOT website.
