I am not sure which wreck that Earl may have referred to, but I'll bet it was the wreck of 483 in 1958. As I recall, it was running doubleheaded westbound downhill into Durango and near Durango when it derailed and rolled down an embankment, killing one or both engine crewmen. I believe this was the incident that brought about the rule change about doubleheading downhill. 483 still carries scars of that wreck. Her original tender still shows where it was crunched on the left rear and its cab had to be rebuilt or replaced--you will notice that its roof ventilator is unlike any other K-36 after the wreck. Considering how the Rio Grande scrapped the 485 after its plunge into the Salida turntable pit a few years previous, we are fortunate that they did not scrap the 483, but chose to rebuild her.
