Also, there was the wreck of 498 and 497 where they were running downhill, doubleheaded in the winter of 1960, I believe. They derailed on ice in the area west of Los Pinos. Again, they rolled off an embankment and both engines required extensive rebuilding, getting replacement tenders, new or rebuilt cabs and the like. Though no one was killed in this wreck, it was quite a mess and no doubt further discouraged the Rio Grande from doubleheading downhill. There is still quite a bit of wreckage at the site, including 498's plow (at least I think it is still there).
