With the advent of four wheel drive vehicles in every garage, old railroad grades are having a much more difficult existence as the "off roaders" find the old grades to be a much more convenient trail to drive through the outback than really breaking trails. There was an old Santa Fe branch that led up to Red Mountain (California Mojave Desert near the intersection of Hwys 58 and 395 more or less paralleling Hwy 395) that was clearly visible from Hwy 395 when I first went through the area 20 years ago but it has virtually disappeared from being driven upon in the intervening years.
