Re: Wandering K28s

Just thinking about the K-27 engs west of Gunnison. (Never heard of any of the 28s west of Gunn.)
Besides the weight problem on the bridges, I wonder if the Grande didn't run the wide cylindered (wide across the steam chests) K-27s because of the close clearances?
The 456 along with a few or the others had those inside canted steam chests.
Does anyone have a clearance diagram that would show if those wide cylindered engines were wider then the narrow cylindered engines.
Obviously, cab & tender widths were probably the same.
By the way, anyone have a reason for the wide vs narrow saddles? Almost makes one wonder if at one time they were thinking about strengthing the bridges in the Black Canyon and the narrow cylinder pattern was one way of getting by the close clearance problem. Of course, if the wide pattern is no wider than than the cab or tender then the supposition is just that.
Any thoughts?
