Because of very light bridges, nothing bigger than a C16 could ever run on the Baldwin Branch. In fact the only reason 223, 268 & 278 survived is because they were needed for use up there. The Baldwin Branch did not become property of the DRGW until 1937. Shortly after that the DRGW replaced the original 30-40 lb rail with 70 lb iron, but they never replaced any of the original bridges.
There are reports of K27's running as light power west of Gunnison - with just enough coal and water in the tender to make it. It must of been pushing the limits of those iron deck truss bridges to the point where it took a major emergency allow it to happen. K27 were hauled dead in train through the Canon to Montrose.
