Wood block floors were pretty common in shops.I don't believe they were such a fire hazard as one would think due to their laying flat and being very dense. They were subject to water damage, however and men who worked restoring the IC Paducah shop after the 1937 flood said the floors had bulges like small hills and ruptured in spots scattering the blocks every where. The treatment made them so dense they did not float readily. They were far more comfortable to work on than concrete.
