I don't believe boiler pressure has much to do with it. Big Boys at 300psi have 32volt systems.
Sometimes as many as three generators were applied to one engine to satisfy things like automatic train control and radio, all of which often ran at different voltages. Grand Canyon's Mike 4960 has three as does the 4449 Daylight I believe.
