The ICC report did not mention retainers. I am not sure where I got the retainer story. Henry Hines was a well thought-of conductor so I am sure he had that covered.
This was the first that I heard the steam burn story. The ICC report said that Reddington had a habit of laying off for long periods of time. I also got the impression that he didn't really want to run the train that day.
