This story was recounted in a book titled "Narrow gauge to the Redwoods" that was reprinted a few years ago by Timber Times (it has a Coker painting on the cover). As the article reports, little is known about what exactly happened as no withesses survived. A lot of rules were broken, though, including some question as to whether the trip up the Cazadero branch had any official authorization.
The NPC was a very interesting railroad that ran from Sausalito, (on the other side of the Golden Gate) to the Russian River. The railroad had some handsome Brooks 4-4-0s,which lasted till the end. It was absorbed by the Northwestern Pacific, and stuggled after logging stopped. Its last run was in March of 1930. There was "not a stick" of freight, according to its only paying passenger, a teenage Ted Wurm.
