Just to throw in some data from another system. more than one of the books on the Sandy river and Rangeley Lakes lines in Maine mention 50 mph speed runs. But they also say that the passenger cars were bouncing around something terrible!
The narrow gauge in general was built with light rails and on too many curves to be believed. Speed was not really its thing. TM
