Ben Greathouse told me this story .the last time the #169 was shopped he was called to fire it running light to Antonito . The engineer called had a reputation as one highballin'SOB . The road to Antonito had been paved recently .Some officials stood around the division superintendent's new Packard .The crew were issued no orders - and the insinuation was clear to go FAST.The pa ckard ,motoring alongside on U.S. 285 struggled to keep up ! The tenwheeler rolled up to the tank at Antonito 28 miles and thirty minutes later .I asked Ben how was firing that little locomotive that size at that speed . He said the firebox door "shrank" at that speed and a lot of coal ended up on the apron....!
