Wade,
The Sumpter Valley #19 was said to have done 55 with the daily passenger train in the 1920's. I must remind you that she is a high stepping Alco Mikado, and the track she was on was straight as an arrow, and had recently been repaired. Apparently the engine rode fine, but the caoches were being thrown around pretty badly. While 55 seems fast, I don't doubt she could do it, we've had her past thirty and she runs like a Cadillac with no effort at all. .
