Thanks to everyone for the input.
Rod, The more I study the pictures in the Narrow Gauge Pictorial Vol V, the more it appears that the grab irons etc. are the body color rather than black. As you say, the grabs that appear darker than the body are most likely less weather faded than the wood body and have retained a darker color.
Mike, I am sure there are exceptions to support anything that one may desire as you stated. I can't positively identify black grabs in any of the photos.
Page 48 of the Narrow Gauge Pictorial Vol V supports the caboose red body with black ironwork and appears to be dated May 18, 1904.
Although I like the look of the black grabs etc., I think I will follow page 11 of the Finescale Railroader 2006 Narrow Gauge Annual and paint the iron work box car red on my model of 0577. I will probably do the same with 0517 when it gets built. Caboose 0575 will remain as is with silver iron work.
