The caboose grab irons were painted aluminum from that time period to abandoment. I'm sure there may have been a variation on one particular caboose somewhere along the line but the standard color was aluminum, until I see a clear pic showing anything to the contrary my research has pointed to aluminum which is well documented. You know we can never say never when dealing with the ng though.
