I did a message here once of the dates the Post Office Department located Edith within Colorado and when it strayed into New Mexico. Some of that was politics because E. M. Biggs, who owned the town, was put in jail in NM for timber theft but commutted by President Cleveland. There were new surveys to finally prove the location which resulted in the bend in the line.
What is wrong with the search of NGDF that it can not be found?
The newspaper article does not clearly state the men tried to hike back to Edith, or maybe to Pagosa Spring. They just could have tried to get to the nearest ranch house. They were shortly discovered frozen or near death so my guess is the rescue train men found them not very far from the stuck train.
I find that to be an amazing story with more to be learned possibly out there.
