George: Have you checked with the Pagosa Springs Sun newspaper. They have a writer, John Motter, who does a series called "Pagosa's Past". If you like I can contact him and see if he can dig up any information about the tragedy.
One thing that struck me as odd is, why did the three men set out for Edith. By your account they were ALOT closer to Pagosa than to Edith.
