Befor jet engines were extensively in service the Douglas DC-7 had the 3350 compound engine that had 3 turbo chargers. Now the aircraft worked fine without the extra boost but the FAA wanted them! Well those suckers would blow the cylinder off the engine. The chargers themselves had to be checked on arrival after a flight when hot to see if they werent frozen and would spin. We had asbestos ( bad Stuff ) gloves up to the sholders to reach up the exaust pipes and give them a spin. Not NG!!!
