After the lowball sale at the local NPR fundraiser I read an artists' guide that discourages donations on the basis that the lowball sales devalue the artists' work- a serious issue in a business that is scary as hell on a good day! American society just started buying fine art in any quantity only in the last 50 years. A lot of ignorant attitudes persist, like we don't care about money and we love to give our art away. You can't eat truth and beauty! We are small business people, and though I would be the first to admit artists in general are not great business people, they have to be good at it one way or another. Fortunately, the buying public is mature and informed ennough to appreciate all kinds of art, or I couldn't make a living. The best thing about being an artist, aside from the freedom, is the quality of the art stands alone, no matter who you are.
