This was the first steam engine I ever had a good look at. It used to run at Griffith park in Los Angeles. I was sold on trains and narrow gauge after that! It was taken out of service in 1962 so I was a little kid when I last saw it under steam. I still remember the conductor shouting "end of the Line!" on the sunny afternoon I rode. I think I talked Dear Old Mom into taking my brother and I there a couple of times. I also talked my mother into taking us on an all-day trip on LA's narrow gauge trolleys a few months before abandonement. What mothers do for their kids!
OR&L 85 was the last operable engine from that road, and unique as an outside-framed ten-wheeler. The return OR&L #85 to Hawaii led to some unfortunate circumstances. A boiler was ordered from a now-defunct west coast company who had a reputation for bad work. Sure enough, the boiler was not only of sustandard construction, it was the wrong size, and didn't fit on the frame. Some LK&P officials lost their jobs over this, and this historic locomotive has languished for many years at Lahaina. If I had a million dollars? This would be my engine!
