Years ago I had fun with open flash....since this is a ng. forum here is an example from Chama taken in December 1961. First open the shutter and then wander around with a flash gun and try to put some light in the right spots. I called it "painting with light". The latitude of the B&W films helped a great deal. And since it only required one flash gun, there was not a lot of equipment (although those big flash bulbs look up room).
But in recent years night photography has risen to a whole new level.....JAC's image is a good example. More and more of the charter freights are putting together some really interesting "set piece" night scenes with all kinds of neat props to provide interest.
And more and more great nightshots both flash and ambient light are getting published on both the web and in the mags.
And digital sure is the way to go. I still shoot film, and recently set up my F100 with Provia 100 side by side with a friend shooting a D200. We framed the same picture. Interestingly, my light meter reading gave almost exactly the same results as he came up with his digital camera. But weeks later when I saw his digital images the differences were striking. Digital had far more "latitude" and provided far more shadow detail, even after I had scanned my image and fiddled with it in Photoshop.....the digital image simply had more information...which of course is no big surprise these days.
Sometimes I wish I'd just trip and send the F100 to heaven to create an excuse for a D200!
