Coal door on Chama Roundhouse

February 10, 2001 04:07PM
The boiler room is in the southwest corner of the Chama enginehouse . There is a wooden door on the south end of the west(brick)wall. It is several feet above ground level , to facilitate shovelling from a gondola into a small bininside the door . From what I was told by old-timers ,the last time the boilers were used for shop steam was in the autumn of 1948 .The stack was 50+ feet high ,and collapsed accidentally in 1971 when some employees tried to stabilize it . the boilers ,which are from very old narrow gauge locomotives ,are still there .
