How many years did they run on the SVRy? They were purchased 11/16/39 from American Iron and Metal Co of Denver. They were equiped with oil burners and tenders and went into service in June of 1940 per AFE522. 250's final trip was Bates to Baker was 4-4-47 hauling lumber. 251's final trip Bates to Baker in regular service hauling lumber was 4-16-47. 251 pulled it's last train on the SVRy 7-14-47 which was 4 flats with equipment for OLC and caboose 5 on a round trip to Bates. So the answer is 7 years more or less. Both engines were reduced to piles of parts for shipment by 7-14-47. I was told by an old SVRy employee who worked on dismantling that liberal use of Mr. Hot Wrench help speed along the dismantling. See photo.
How long did they run with their side tanks and tenders? The AFE mentions removal of the side tanks from the get go, so I would speculate not long. Maybe days or maybe as long as a few monthes.
Was it an experiment to see how the TE would be effected. Don't know.
Were they ever used in pass. service? The last passenger train on the SVRy was 1937. Someone will point out a maybe to this. I believe this was end of reg. scheduled pass. service and carrying a railway clerk. I believe it coincided with the loss of the mail contract. I have heard by word of mouth that a few pass. trains were run at later dates for special situations. The coaches went to MOW, so it is possible the mallets pulled the coaches/combines in this way to work sites. I have not seen a photo with a mallet pulling a train with a coach or combine. Eng 17 was also converted to oil and would have been available for work trains in the early 40's, so maybe and maybe not untill someone comes up with a photo.
How long were the 2-6-6-2's? Engine and tender length was 54'3". Weight on drivers 182,000lbs, total engine wt.218,000, tender 82,000, total eng and tender 300,000. T.E was listed by SVRy as 42,100lbs.
Now my question: How much do K37 and K36's weight?
