In July my wife and I rode the train...we took the bus from Chama to Antonito and returned by train. Even my wife, who isn't into trains (sheesh!) agrees that it was a wonderful trip.
We almost didn't get to the C&TS this year, since we only had nine days and it's a 5000 mile round trip...but after about 2 miles on the train we both agreed that it was worth the drive.
I love the narrow gauge and the C&TS. Chama, Antonito, Osier, etc. are special places and that comes in part from the trains and history, in part from the beautiful scenery and relaxed pace of life, and in part from the great people we've met.
We visited with Roger and Barbara, stayed in the campground, wandered down to the Trackside Emporium, bought ice cream from the mall, laughed with and at Chuck the docent (but he gives as good as he takes!), and had a fantastic ride behind Carlos and Max in the 488. (How many places allow passengers to take their time puttering around the cab of the engine during the lunch stop? Thanks Carlos!!)
I don't know much about the goat and the squabbling back and forth. I just know that I'm extremely grateful to the many people that make the C&TS what it is today. It is a precious, rare experience. Let's make sure we don't lose it!
