Let me answer Steven, Jim and John's questions in one post.
The gauge is 76 cm, about 2.5 feet.
The logs are dragged to the loading point by tractors. There are multiple loading points, and evidence to suggest that the loading points move around depending on where the cutting is on the hillsides high above the railroad. No spar trees that I could see.
The tracks are owned by the Romanian government, but the lumber company was privatized some years ago. Government ownership of the tracks allows something of an open access arrangement. In the past there were two lumber companies operating over them, but the R J Holz Company bought out the other company. Now the two operators are the Holz Company and the Swiss tourist railway operation mentioned in my tour report.
I don't think the mill is steam operated. The only part of the mill I ventured into was the sorting operation.
Bernd Seiler is very much a bi-lingual tour guide. He speaks fluent English as well as German. Typically announcements are made in both German and English. His clientele is about 50-50 German speaking and non-German speaking, with English being the common denominator among the non-German speakers. I have traveled with TUT, Steam and Safari, Globe Tours, and Farrail. I was very satisfied with this tour.
