Nobody is questioning how the crews operated the engines, just the consist and what is authentic looking.
However, going along with this comment, I would submit that perhaps the railroad would not run a rear pusher ahead of the caboose like we did in the 90's. I know Earl stated that the outfit cars did not like being pushed on. Another factor, which may or may not be valid is that perhaps crews were not experienced in rear pusher operations, which would seem to be more difficult than a mid-train helper.
When Les and John West and I did a photo special in May 1997 Earl Knoob ran the rear pusher 484, but did not want to stop and back the train up each time on the hill to Cumbres for fear of pulling the whole train apart or worse! So in that case we chased by car and used radios while stopping the train a few times en route but no back-up moves. No doubt train-handling on the C&TS is an art, especially with freight cars and helpers which are not simply coupled together on the point.
I agree with Les and J.Craft that the guys who sponsor these things have the right to do what they want and make it their show. Its not always the most prototypical, but its their show! Sometimes its fun to do something "Different". Our 1993 adventure was fun when we changed engines and directions at a reflecting pond at Lobato siding. Ending with lovely westbound sunshine in low light was a highlight of the weekend, as we passed the coaling tower, and end of track by the wye. Thats stuff that was not usual on specials, and something unique to see and photograph.
I still have not seen any pics of the trip in any snow, so wonder why the flanger was on the train.
My suggestion for a 3 engine day scenario.
Freight train to Cumbres with front and rear pusher and 25-30 cars. A second train with a singe engine, either a work train or a San Juan Passenger train for the riders, keeping the freight a pure consist. Use 0503 only as caboose, and the short caboose on the work train.
Something for someone in the future perhaps!!!

PS One thing fun about the C&TS is we can fantasize about different scenarios, knowing that in reality they might come true someday!!! Thats not something you can say on most steam railroads today!!!
