My dad, Bill Gibson, rode the last train on
the C&S to go from Idaho Springs to Empire in January 1937. One
of the pictures he shot while riding in a gondola
of rock, shows a box car load of dynamite coupled
directly to the helper engine.
While we were riding DRGW #215 in 1947, Dad showed the
picture to a fellow passenger, who happened to be
the I.C.C. hazardous cargo inspector, and he almost
had a cardiac arrest just thinking about it.
