Thanks, Ken.
I assume the CB&Q was still required to burn oil until abandonment. True?
The Q's shops in Denver were actually C&S.
Are there any photographs of 537 rebuilt as an oil burner?
There are a couple of well known photographs of 537 after rebuilding. Both are of the left side. The engine has a cinder catcher, and Bettendorf trucks under the tender. The tender is also fitted for coal, with high side sheets on the bunker. The headlight is mounted flush with the front of the smokebox and the pilot beam has not been modified for a snowplow or priest flanger.
My thoughts are that these pictures were taken in '30, right after 537's conversion to burn coal on the C&S. They undoubtadly give clues to what the engine looked like back in the Black Hills, but I assume she still burned oil.
The details I mention above are not visible in any pictures taken of 537 in regular service on the C&S that I have ever seen, so 537 was quickly modified.
