The train started out as an RGRPC promotion "tripleheader" during the slow time between Labor Day and the fall stock rush. a week or so ahead of time we had a little over 100 tix sold and at best we would have enough passegeners for a wimpy doubleheader but no where near enough to put 3 engines on the train. Nothing bugs me more than multi-engine trains that don't justify more than one engine. I surmised "why come up to see a fake tripleheader when you can wait 2 weeks and see the real thing?". So I came up with the mid-engine mixed train idea. Plus, throw the caboose on the tail end and charge folks $50 to ride to Cumbres and back. We'll even throw in a couple of runbys. Local management loved it. I posted it to the web, sold out the caboose, ticket sales in 10 days went to over 300. As it was certain RGRPC BOD members were dead set against it and it almost was cancelled the night before. But we did anyway. I got the idea from seeing 1950's Silverton Branch trains with freight ahead of the 10 car passenger train. The often cut the second engine in just ahead of the passenger cars. I always thought the 4 engine stock trains with a pair of helpers cut in the middle looked cool, so I added that feature. Sort of "Marshall Pass meets The Silverton Mixed".
It was fun and the last "for fun thing" I ever got to do in Chama.
