Dear Mr. Ron Briton & Web,
I'll attempt to make a quick reply about Hallack & Howard regarding Idaho. Please find Sundance Publication of 1989 "The Log Trains of Southern Idaho", by Jim Witherell. This and logging notes used, but I'm not attempting to give complete history of Cascade, Idaho. On July 25, 1927 the Hallack & Howard Lumber Co., HQ Denver bought control of the Eccles Lumber Co (ex W.H. Eccles Lumber Co.) at Cascade, Idaho.
1925 15 miles at Cascade 2 eng 35 flat [Shay#1884 and another engine].
1926 5 miles 1 gear [shay #1884]
1927 6 miles 1 gear [Heisler #1306 rec 2-1927 and Shay #1884 left in March 1927 back to OL #101.]
1928 6 miles run by H&H using 1 gear (Heisler #1306) 20 log cars and 5 moving cars. On Nov 26, 1928 engine wrecked and rr shut down, mill used trucks temp.
1929 6 miles 2 gear (now #1306 and Climax #1533)
1930 10.5 miles 40-56# 12% 60 degree max curve, 2 gear loco and 10 flats.
cut record---
incomplete- it may be in the book but the engine data is as follows:
Shay #1884 OLCo. #101 at Cascade 9-1925 to 3-1927
Climax #1533 H&H #6 transferred to Cascade.ID shortly after 11/26/1928 wreck, along with 50 man crew to build new logging line. Climax sold to SVRy #8, then sold to O.L.Co. #105 and scrapped 1947 by one report and 1949 by another report.
Heisler #1306 at W.H.Eccles in Oregon 1915 to 2/1927. Moved to work at Cascade 2/1927 till when it was obtained by SV for restoration. Worked for W.H.Eccles L. Co. and Eccles Lumber Co. and Hallack & Howard Lumber Co. without being repainted.
I like to know the exact date Climax #6 moved to Cascade and was it direct from La Madera, NM or by way of storage at Denver, or use at Dulce??
