OK before you guys go and reinvent the wheel, surf on over to the Narrow Gauge Preservation Foundation site and you will see the organization already exists for what you want to do.
They have already contributed more than a half million dollars to narrow gauge preservation projects and are actively working behind the scenes on others. They keep their administration costs low <5% so donations (tax deductible) go to the project(s) and not all eaten up by overhead....
