Trails Among the Columbine, 1993/1994, pp 180-191, has an excellent article on the Salida Mechanical Transfer. The cars were moved by gravity with the aid of 4 brakemen. The narrow gauge cars were held in place by 4 clamps. Cables ran from the towers around the rims of the circular girders, and the counterweights were moved up as the car was rolled for unloading.
