Relaying info. from Asian researcher:
"Hi Pat,
I had a chance to visit a library in a train museum here and looked through
the engine roster of sugar systems of Negros Island, Philippines.
Unfortunately, I could not find any American built engine with 8 drive
wheels. However, there was an interesting story.
There were 2 Baldwin engines (0-6-0, 3 foot gauge) came to Philippines from
Hawaii. Although the early history of those 2 engines are unknown, they
worked at a sugar company called Honolulu Plantation Co. in Hawaii until
1947. Then they were sold to a sugar company called Hawaiian Philippine Co.
(HPC) in Negroes Island, Philippines in 1947. They have engine names of
"Manna" and "Halawa" while in Hawaii. Then they received engine # 8 and 9 in
Philippines.
I took a picture of the engine #9 at HPC in November 1999. Although this
engine obviously looks different from the #9 which your are looking for, I
attach the picture for your reference (jpg file). Unfortunately, the engine
#9 does not carry a builder's plate and builder's # is unknown.
If I find any more information, I will send you.
After the Cuba trip, I go to Washington State in April to see a steam
excursion pulled by SP&S #700 (4-8-4).
Regards,
Yoshi from Japan"
